Tania's Story“As the mom of two preemies, one born at 27 weeks and one born at 25 weeks, we found out the importance of Medicaid as a secondary insurance. When my daughter was born at 27 weeks, we had private health insurance coverage. A month later, I found out about SSI and Medicaid and applied; however, from that one month there was over $1000/day that my insurance did not cover and that was just for the doctors – it didn't include tests or hospital charges. When my son was born also prematurely, we immediately enrolled to get Medicaid for secondary coverage. I know that if he did not have the Medicaid as a secondary we would have had even worse financial problems – his length of stay was 6 ½ months.”
