| Infant Mortality Rates by Maternal Race |
In 1999, the infant mortality rate for infants born to mothers of all races/ethnicities was 7.0 per 1,000 live births. Infants born to African-American mothers were more than twice as likely as infants born to white mothers to die in the first year of life (with infant mortality rates of 14.0 and 5.8 per 1,000 live births, respectively). Infants born to Asian or Pacific Islander mothers were the least likely of all major racial groups to die in the first year of life (4.8). Infant mortality rates for all racial groups were higher than the Healthy People 2010 objective of 4.5. |
