Live Births by Maternal Age, 2000

In 2000, more than half of all live births were to women in their 20s, with 25.1 percent of babies born to women 20-24 years and 26.8 percent of babies born to women 25-29 years. A total of 34 percent were to women in their 30s (22.9 percent to women 30-34 years and 11.1 percent to women 35-37 years).

In 2000, about 1 out of every 9 live births (11.8 percent) was to a teen mother (less than 20 years of age).  The majority of births to teens occurred to women 18-19 years (7.7 percent of all live births).  About 4 percent of all live births were to teens less than 17 years.

More than 2 percent of all live births in 2000 were to women over the age of 40, with less than 255 live births (<0.1 percent) occurring to women ages 50-54.
