MAY 7, 2007 -- This morning on the “CBS Early Show,”
Dr. Emily Senay's daily health segment featured the importance of the B vitamin
folic acid in preventing serious birth defects. Dr. Senay told viewers that the March of Dimes recommends that all women of childbearing age should consume 400 micrograms of folic acid every day, prior to becoming pregnant, in order to prevent birth defects of the brain and spine known as neural tube defects (NTDs). The most common NTD is
spina bifida. The
March of Dimes was cited throughout the segment on the subject.
