Tenth Annual March of Dimes Prize in Developmental Biology

WASHINGTON, MAY 16, 2005—Oliver Smithies, D.Phil, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (left), and Mario R. Capecchi, Ph.D., University of Utah School of Medicine, were awarded the tenth annual March of Dimes Prize in Developmental Biology at a black-tie event this evening.  The March of Dimes Prize is a cash award of $250,000 and a silver medal in the design of the Roosevelt dime.  The Prize is presented each year to investigators whose research has profoundly advanced the science that underlies our understanding of birth defects.  The March of Dimes created the Prize as a tribute to Dr. Jonas Salk on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the polio vaccine that bears his name.
