What are the goals of SATAPP?
Whether you’re single or married, teen-aged or middle-aged, the SATAPP Program gives you the tools you need to make smart choices about a healthy lifestyle that will help lead to responsible fatherhood. In discussion groups led by SATAPP mentors, males of all ethnic backgrounds and races talk about the impact these issues have on their lives. What’s the best way to recruit young men/adults to participate?
Since the SATAPP program appeals to a wide array of men, spanning the spectrum from adolescence to middle age, an effective way to reach these audiences is to target them by age groups. In recruiting teenagers for SATAPP, you should work with your YMCA, local schools, after-school programs, libraries, Boys Clubs, church youth groups, Police Athletic League, or sports leagues. Adult males may be interested in attending a SATAPP workshop sponsored in part by the PTA, NAACP, Urban League, men’s sports leagues, neighborhood watch group, or local chamber of commerce. Sigma Beta clubs are an ideal audience for the SATAPP Program. Members should be encouraged to bring family and friends to the program.
Where can I get funding for my program?
Financial support is available from various sources. Check with your local government agencies, organizations, and businesses for financial support. Ask your local March of Dimes how to apply for funding through its community grants program. Your local United Way also may be able to direct you to local foundations that fund projects for youth in the area of pregnancy prevention, violence prevention, fatherhood, and economic empowerment.
How can we find excellent speakers? What qualifications should we look for in speakers and facilitators of our SATAPP Program?
Local youth-serving agencies and organizations are excellent resources for locating speakers and facilitators for your SATAPP Program. The Alumni chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity would be a great place to begin your search for speakers as well as the local chapter of the March of Dimes. When recruiting expert speakers, make sure they are experienced in the topic area, dynamic, and comfortable discussing the issues with young men.
Since SATAPP programs are implemented among men only, it is important that speakers and facilitators are male rather than female. This will keep participants from becoming uncomfortable when discussing sensitive topic areas.
