  Judy Woodruff Elected to National Board of Advisors of March of Dimes

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., JULY 27, 2001 – Judy Woodruff, a 30-year veteran of broadcast journalism and the prime anchor and senior correspondent for CNN’s Inside Politics in Washington, D.C., has been elected to the national Board of Advisors of the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation, it was announced today.

March of Dimes trustees and advisors, who serve as volunteers, represent the public in governing the Foundation and helping it realize its mission to prevent birth defects and infant mortality.

Ms. Woodruff is a longtime advocate of the March of Dimes folic acid education campaign to prevent serious birth defects of the brain and spine known as neural tube defects (NTDs). In 1998, she and Dr. Jennifer Howse, president of the March of Dimes, served together on a national blue-ribbon panel created to promote the use of this B vitamin by women of childbearing age. In 1994, Ms. Woodruff and her husband Albert Hunt, Jr.were named "Washingtonians of the Year" by Washington magazine for their fundraising efforts to fight spina bifida and other NTDs. They have spoken publicly of their son Jeffrey, now a teenager, who was born with a neural tube defect.

Ms. Woodruff has been with CNN since 1993. Previously, she was the chief Washington correspondent for The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour and from 1984 to 1990, she anchored public television's award-winning weekly documentary series Frontline with Judy Woodruff. Prior to joining the NewsHour, Ms. Woodruff was chief Washington correspondent for NBC's Today.

Ms. Woodruff received her bachelor's degree from Duke University. She serves on several other boards, including the Freedom Forum, the Knight Fellowships in Journalism at Stanford University, the Carnegie Corporation of America, and the Urban Institute.

Ms. Woodruff, her husband, and their three children, Jeffrey, Benjamin and Lauren Ann, reside in Washington, D.C.

The March of Dimes is a national voluntary health agency whose mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects and infant mortality.
