  March of Dimes Announces the Award of Four Nursing Scholarships

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., JUNE 26, 2000 – The March of Dimes has announced the award of four nursing scholarships, twice the previous number of scholarships it awards in the field of maternal-child health.

"The March of Dimes recognizes that the quality of care offered to mothers and their infants by perinatal nurses is crucial to the success of our mission," said Dr. Jennifer L. Howse, president of the March of Dimes. "This increased number of scholarships underscores our desire to encourage higher education for registered nurses in maternal-child health and to advance high quality care for mothers and babies." The annual award of nursing scholarships was founded in 1997 to assist registered nurses enrolled in graduate programs in maternal-child nursing.

The four scholarship winners, each of whom receives $5,000 to continue her education, are:

Therese McMahan, studying at the University of Rhode Island. She is a OB/GYN nurse practitioner at the East Boston Neighborhood Health Center.

Emily Merideth, studying at the University of California at San Francisco. She is an registered nurse at the John Muir Medical Center, Birth Center, Postpartum Unit, in Walnut Creek, California.

Verna J. Schad, studying at the Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing in Kentucky. She is a family nurse practitioner at HIS Hospital and Clinic in Eagle Butte, South Dakota.

Laura Strange, studying at of Emory University in Atlanta. She is a research associate at New York University, Division of Nursing, in New York.

Qualified applicants are registered nurses currently enrolled in a graduate program in maternal-child nursing at the Masters or Doctorate level. Applicants should be a member of the American College of Nurse-Midwives, the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses, or the National Association of Neonatal Nurses.

Applications for the 2001 award will be accepted no later than January 31, 2001. The application will be available this fall on the March of Dimes Website at www.marchofdimes.com, or by calling (914) 997-4456.


The March of Dimes is a national voluntary health agency whose mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects and infant mortality.
