March of Dimes Grantee Helps Find Gene Linked to Brain Defect

September 24, 2002—A team of scientists funded in part by the March of Dimes report this month in the journal Nature Genetics that they have identified a gene that helps determines brain size. Christopher A. Walsh, M.D., Ph.D., of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Institutes of Medicine, Boston is working with a grant from the March of Dimes to find and study genes linked to microcephaly (abnormally small head and brain) and other brain malformations that cause mental retardation, epilepsy, and cerebral palsy. The goal is to develop diagnostic tests that can provide a more accurate prognosis for affected children, and enable reliable genetic counseling about recurrence risks for families. For more information, read the article on The New York Times Web site (free registration is required).
