Bikers for Babies Rides to Talladega Superspeedway!
05-May-10

Bikers Hit the Road for Babies

March of Dimes Bikers for Babies® Brings Riders Together

On Saturday, July 31st die-hard bikers and weekend warriors will meet at our various Alabama gateways ride together to raise urgently needed funds to help every baby be born healthy.  Bikers for Babies will start from gateways in Huntsville, Muscle Shoals, Gadsden, Birmingham, Montgomery, Dothan and Mobile and will all ride to Talladega Superspeedway where they’ll meet up for laps around the track.  Individual riders as well as motorcycle clubs will hit the road to help support March of Dimes research and programs to help moms have full-term pregnancies and babies begin healthy lives. Last year, more than 1,200 residents participated in the ride, with family and friends there to join in the fun.  In Alabama, funds raised by Bikers for Babies supports several community grants across the state, as well as research, education and advocacy into premature birth, birth defects and infant mortality.  Walt McGregor, Quallis Corporation in Huntsville is the 2009-2010 Bikers for Babies Chair for Alabama.  He says, “Seeing the riders set out together in support of the smallest members of our community, is always an incredible sight.  The roar of the bikes moving in unison speaks to the power this group has to help babies, and trust me, the bikers love the thrill of riding laps around Talladega Superspeedway.”

The event’s title sponsor is ERC, Incorporated in Huntsville.  Several statewide motorcycle clubs that participate include the H.O.G. Chapter(s), several groups from the Christian Motorcyclists Association, several groups from the Blue Knights and so many more.
The March of Dimes is requesting that those who are interested in supporting and participating in the 2010 Bikers for Babies Ride to Talladega go ahead and sign up online at http://www.bikersforbabiesal.org/.  For more information about the event or how to become more involved, please contact Alan Lesley at (256) 627-7175 or e-mail alesley@marchofdimes.com.  The most urgent infant health problem in the U.S. today is premature birth.  It affects more than half a million babies each year, with the number growing every day.  In 2008 the March of Dimes issued a Report Card on Premature Birth, giving the nation a D and Alabama an F.  Babies born too soon are more likely to die or have disabilities.  The March of Dimes is committed to reducing this toll by funding research to find the answers to premature birth and providing comfort and information to families who are affected.
