Alaskan Prematurity Campaign
In February of 2003 the Alaska Chapter of the March of Dimes launched it's new five-year Prematurity Campaign aimed at decreasing the rate of preterm births in Alaska and increasing public awareness of the problems associated with preterm birth and low birthweight. Prematurity/low birthweight is the leading cause of death in the first month of life. In an average week in Alaska 19 babies are born preterm. Premature babies are more likely to suffer life-long consequences than babies born full term.
