Folic Acid

Folic Acid for a Healthy Return
The Alaska Folic Acid Coalition was established in March of 1999, comprised of representatives from a wide variety of agencies.  These included March of Dimes, State of Alaska Department of Health & Social Services, Municipality of Anchorage, Alaska Native Medical Center, Southcentral Foundation and others.

The Coalition initially met monthly to discuss implementation of the National Folic Acid Campaign.  Accomplishments include:
  • Conducted a statewide telephone survey to establish a baseline of folic acid knowledge and use
  • Obtained local media exposure, including theater ads
  • Developed an Alaska specific poster, brochure, note cube and magnet
  • Distributed various types of folic acid educational materials and vitamins
  • Educated community health aides in rural Alaska
  • Conducted a folic acid conference for health professionals in December 2001

The Coalition subsequently experienced a lull in activity and is currently looking to renew participation from local agencies and individuals.

Call us at (907) 276-2290 or e-mail us for further information.
