Arizona Chapter History
|
Fifty years ago, parents in Phoenix organized a fund-raiser: "Turn on your porch light, fight polio tonight!" The annual Mothers March Campaign was born.
With polio defeated, the mission of the March of Dimes moved on to include development of newborn screening, establishment of neonatal intensive care units, fetal surgery to correct birth defects, development of surfactant therapy, folic acid awareness, and much more.
Arizonans continue to support the efforts of their local March of Dimes each year by volunteering their time and skills, making monetary contributions, and sharing our mission with others.
Key program activities in Arizona have included public affairs advocacy on issues that affect women, children and families; increasing access to prenatal care through efforts such as "Baby Arizona" and establishing the "MOM Mobile," a prenatal health promotion program for worksites; perinatal substance abuse education; coordination of "Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalitions" statewide; distribution of funds for local community interventions through the community grants program and the Prematurity Symposium in January, 2003. |
