Prematurity Campaign in Arizona
Premature birth is increasing at an alarming rate in Arizona and across the nation -- nearly 30% in the past 20 years. In an average week in Arizona, 239 babies will be born too soon and 12 will die before their first birthdays.
Babies who survive being born too soon may face lifelong disabilities or chronic illnesses, including cerebral palsy, vision and hearing impairment, respiratory problems and developmental delays.
The March of Dimes Arizona Chapter is dedicated to reducing the number of babies who are born too soon. Local educational outreach in communities statewide provides women of childbearing age with information about the warning signs of preterm labor, and preconception planning to help give babies the best chance for a healthy start in life.
While not all causes of preterm labor are known, some risk factors include previous preterm birth, multiple birth, smoking, unplanned pregnancy, infections and poor nutrition.
