Working together to improve the health of moms and babies in our community

March of Dimes Arizona Chapter and our partner organizations are helping moms have healthier pregnancies and babies begin healthier lives. Below are some programs where our 2011 grants and awards are making a difference.

Teenage Pregnancy

Of all live births in Arizona during 2006-2008 (average), 12.6% were to women under the age of 20. Babies delivered to younger and older women are often at increased risk of poor birth outcomes, including prematurity, low birthweight and infant mortality.

The Arizona Chapter awarded a grant to Our Family Services, in Tucson, to support the Prepared Teens program. This program aims to ensure that babies are born healthy, adolescent mothers have support through their pregnancy, and reduce the risk of unplanned, repeat pregnancies. The program combined case management, registered nurse education, mentoring, education, father/family involvement, and peer support.

Teen Outreach Pregnancy Services (TOPS), in Tucson, received funding to provide teen specific education on an array of pregnancy and preconception issues including the importance of folic acid.

Preconception Care

Southwest Human Development, in Phoenix, received a grant to nursing consultation component of Healthy Families to strategically address preconception services and risk reduction.
