Protecting your baby from environmental hazards

Does your baby have a suit of armor? That’s one way to keep him safe from harmful chemicals, although it’s probably not very comfortable! There are lots of chemicals out there that can hurt a baby. It’s up to you to know what they are and how to protect your baby from them.

Let’s start with the air he breathes. Learn how to protect your baby from air pollution. Keep baby away from secondhand smoke. Secondhand smoke is smoke from other people’s cigarettes, cigars and pipes. If you smoke, quit. Don’t let anyone smoke around your baby or inside your home or car.

Make sure your drinking water is clean and safe for your baby. If you have lead pipes in your home, use only bottled water for your baby.

Things like pesticides, mold and even certain plastics can also harm your baby. Be sure to keep baby away from these things.

Do you know what to do in case of a disaster? A disaster is an event that brings an extreme amount of stress into your life.  It could be something natural, like a flood, an earthquake or a storm.  Or it may be caused by people, like a terrorist attack or a car accident. Put together a plan for what you’ll do in case of a disaster.
