California Chapter 2007 Community Awards
CARES Research Foundation - $3,000 To allow patients and their families to attend the seventh annual CAH (Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia) Family Conference at no expense. The conference will allow patients and families to meet with other members of the CAH community and to become better acquainted with current avenues of CAH research.
Vision y Compromiso - $3,000 To support the Fifth Annual Statewide Promotora and Community Health Worker conference, held in December 2007.
Bay Area Division Bayview-Hunters Point YMCA - $2,000 To assist with expenses for a Project Alpha event. Project Alpha is an education program which emphasizes the responsibilities of young men in preventing teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.
City of Berkeley Black Infant Health Program - $2,000 To replenish the Stork’s Nest Baby Store with infant clothes and other items such as toys, books baby furniture, car seats and strollers.
Julie Solomon Consulting, LLC - $891 To conduct an evaluation of the March of Dimes Preterm Labor Assessment Toolkit.
Mission Neighborhood Health Center - $2,000 To support La Tiendita, which is similar to the Stork’s Nest program. Patients are given points as an incentive to pregnant patients of the Health Center to attend prenatal classes. Patients can then use the points to purchase new clothing for their babies.
UC Berkeley MCH Program - $150 To cover speaker fees for Meeka Centimano’s presentation at the Bright Beginnings Teach-In. The teach-in was an educational event for health care providers, focusing on maternal mental health issues among pregnant and post partum women in California. Central Valley Division Fresno Black Infant Health Coalition - $2,000 To purchase incentive items, such as baby clothing and equipment to encourage women to attend prenatal visits and educational sessions as part of the Stork’s Place program.
Fresno County Economic Opportunities Commission - $1,000 To support Comenzando Bien prenatal and health education classes for pregnant and parenting teens.
Greater Capital Division Alpha phi Alpha Fraternity (Zeta Beta Lambda Chapter) - $2,750 To support individual and ongoing Project Alpha events for young African-American men. Project Alpha is an education program which emphasizes the responsibilities of young men in preventing teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.
CAPRI of the Sierras - $1,325 To increase prenatal health education and information/referral services available to pregnant women who use alcohol and other drugs. Funds will be used to conduct a public awareness poster campaign, provide professional education trainings and for outreach to integrate substance abuse screening, assessment, referral and treatment services into prenatal care in Alpine and El Dorado counties.
Communicare Health Centers - $2,000 To support the continuing services of Communicare’s Stork’s Nest program at Davis Community Clinic and at Salud Clinic in West Sacramento. Funds will be used to purchase baby clothes, diapers and blankets to meet the needs of the clinics’ clients.
Marshall Medical Center - $1,500 To continue providing free Healthy Pregnancy education classes to the community throughout 2007. Funds will also cover community and provider outreach to attract more women to these classes.
Sacramento County Department of Public Health - $2,515 Funding will allow the Best Practice Exploratory Team to visit and research four promising research-based interventions focusing on reducing premature births in the African-American community.
Inland Empire Division Inland Counties Regional Perinatal Programs - $1,500 To support a Maternal-Fetal and Neonatal Transport forum to promote risk appropriate care in outlying hospitals.
Inland Counties Regional Perinatal Programs - $2,850 To support the Perinatal Outreach Program, including distribution of the March of Dimes Preterm Labor Assessment Toolkit.
Loma Linda University Medical Center - $3,000 To support a professional education seminar on Diabetes and Pregnancy.
Los Angeles Division Eisner Pediatric & Family Medical Center - $3,000 To support a two-day CenteringPregnancy training workshop for staff from community clinics throughout Los Angeles.
Good Beginnings (Cedars-Sinai Medical Center) - $2,500 To assist with printing a souvenir ‘Then and Now’ booklet for distribution at a NICU family reunion. The booklet will contain two photos (one taken in the NICU and one current photo) of every NICU graduate.
LA Best Babies Network - $3,000 Towards funding production of a video focusing on preconception care. The video uses activities in Los Angeles County as examples of preconception care in practice, and to demonstrate the importance of preconception care in improving birth outcomes for infants and mothers.
PAC/LAC - $1,500 To produce syllabus materials for attendees to the PAC/LAC Annual Conference, titled Quality of Life for Families XI: Improving the Outcomes of Pregnancy.
Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics - $2,462 To purchase incentives and educational materials for the clinic’s Lending Library Program. This program serves 100-140 low-income pregnant women every month. The incentives and educational materials help to motivate women to attend counseling and prenatal care sessions at the clinic.
Ventura County Public Health - $989 To purchase materials for the Perinatal Substance Abuse Prevention Program. These materials include informational flyers for women, presentation materials for outreach and a revised screening tool for obstetrical providers to screen for risk of substance abuse, domestic violence and depression during pregnancy.
Orange County Division The Assist Group - $1,500 To support a talk by Dr Calvin Hobel at the Assist Group Annual Conference. Dr Hobel will speak on ‘Future Trends in Prevention of Prematurity and Poor Birth Outcomes’ at the conference, which is aimed at all healthcare professionals involved in the management of complex maternal-newborn cases.
Children’s Hospital Orange County (CHOC) at Mission - $2,568 To provide breastfeeding education and assistance for new mothers with babies in the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Funds will be used to support a Lactation Educator to provide services in the NICU for 6 hours a month.
Orange County Breastfeeding Coalition - $1,500 To support a one-day breastfeeding conference. The conference will offer current information for health care professionals working with pregnant and lactating women and will feature Gini Baker, an internationally recognized breastfeeding advocate and educator.
SSEP - $1,500 To support the Sweet Success 2007: Diabetes and Pregnancy Research Conference. Funds will support speaker and meal expenses for the conference, which will help to bring current research and standards of care to California Diabetes and Pregnancy Programs.
San Diego Division Family Health Centers of San Diego - $2,300 To establish a Stork’s Nest program for Black Infant Health program clients. Funds will be used to purchase incentives and educational materials for clients who actively attend prenatal or postnatal doctor visits and participate in parenting classes or weekly group activities.
Garfield High School Expectant Teen Class - $870 To purchase March of Dimes health education materials. These materials will help to update and improve lessons taught in the Biology Class for pregnant and parenting teens.
Operation Samahan - $2,300 To implement the Stork’s Nest program within the existing perinatal services program. Funds will be used to purchase the Stork’s Nest curriculum, March of Dimes health education materials and incentive items for participating mothers.
San Diego Breastfeeding Coalition - $1,380 To cover speaker fees for one-day professional education seminar. The seminar will examine ways to reach and support Muslim, African-American and Hispanic women and families in their efforts to breastfeed and achieve better infant and maternal health outcomes.
Zeta Phi Beta – Mu Sigma Zeta Chapter - $650 To purchase incentives and educational items for two existing Stork’s Nest sites.
South Bay Division Catalyst for Youth - $3,000 To support the NineZero conference. The conference is designed to raise knowledge and awareness of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder among healthcare providers.
Good Samaritan Hospital - $1,500 To help low-income parents of babies in the NICU bond with their babies and learn to care for their babies’ special needs. Funds will be used to purchase gas vouchers for parents who could not otherwise afford to visit their babies and to cover the cost of the CPR training recommended for all NICU families.
Mujer a Mujer - $3,000 To support the Second Annual Latina Leadership Conference. The conference will be attended by prospective mothers, mothers, teachers, parent educators and home care providers, who will receive information on preconception health, prenatal care and the high rate of premature births to Latina women. Valley Division Doctors Medical Center Foundation - $3,000 To offer perinatal and childbirth-focused health and safety classes to prospective parents who would not otherwise have access to this essential education due to lack of finances and/or health insurance.
Stanislaus County Health Services Agency - $3,000 To publish and distribute an additional 1,600 copies of the Pregnancy and Infancy Calendar. The Calendars tell women what to expect during pregnancy and the first six months of their baby’s life. Total for 2007: $75,000
