The March of Dimes offers an exciting internship program based in its Washington, DC office that gives participants the opportunity to learn about our government and make a difference in federal and state policies related to women, infants, children and families.
The March of Dimes Office of Government Affairs in Washington, DC conducts and coordinates advocacy activities at the federal and state levels around key maternal and child health policy priorities. Our advocacy priorities include ensuring access to health care for women, children and families; promoting medical and scientific research on pregnancy and birth outcomes; advancing prevention and education activities related to health pregnancy and birth, such as tobacco cessation; and supporting issues important to tax-exempt organizations.
The Office of Government Affairs houses both the federal and state government affairs activities. On the federal level, our team of registered lobbyists advocates with Congress and Administration agencies on issues such as health care reform implementation, maternal and child health programs, public health, Medicaid, CHIP and private insurance issues, NIH research, CDC educational and public health programs, and budget priorities. Our state government affairs team works directly with our 50 state chapters on priorities for state legislative action, such as newborn screening program improvements, budget levels, and health care reform implementation.
The Internship Program is designed to give participants an inside perspective on maternal and child health legislation and policy development. Examples of internship activities may include:
- Hearings and briefings: Interns may attend Congressional hearings or briefings on key maternal and child health issues.
- Research: Interns frequently perform important research for both the federal and state teams on legislative issues.
- Advocacy: Interns may attend meetings with Congressional offices or make calls regarding specific legislation.
- Coalitions: Interns may join coalition meetings where maternal and child health policy and strategies are discussed and coordinated.
The program is open to college students participating in a structured program that confers academic credit or those seeking short-term relevant work experience (such as students pursuing summer internships.) The internship program is not paid.
The internship program generally follows the academic year, with internships offered for the spring (January-May), summer (June-August) and fall (September-December). Students are preferred to work a regular schedule of Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm. Flexibility will be offered to students in programs that require attendance at classes or other events.
Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis, but no later than the following dates:
By November 15 for the spring session (starting in January)
By April 30 for the summer session (starting in June)
By July 15 for the fall session (starting in September)
