Grand Junction Family of Triplets Thankful for March of Dimes
21-Apr-05
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo., April 21, 2005--For Grand Junction residents Angel and Mike Piechota and their 5-year-old triplets, March of Dimes has a special place in their hearts.

"When you look at our boys today, please realize they would not be alive if not for March of Dimes," Angel says.

The triplets were born at 26 weeks gestation, 14 weeks before their due date. Weighing between 1 pound, 11 ounces and 2 pounds, the couple was told by doctors they would have only a 50-75 percent chance of survival and that if they did survive, they would probably suffer severe long-term complications.

"The doctors said that if the boys would have been born just five years earlier they probably would not have survived at all," Angel says. "There were times in the weeks following their birth that I just prayed I would be able to take even one baby home. But because of research funded by the March of Dimes, we now have our three boys at home and they are happy and healthy.

Angel and Mike, along with the triplets, Andrew, Brandon and Justin, and their 11-year-old sister Angie, are this year's March of Dimes and WalkAmerica Ambassador Family. They serve as the hope the March of Dimes gives to thousands of families throughout the United States each year.

WalkAmerica is set this year for April 30, with registration at 8 a.m. and the walk beginning at 9 a.m. WalkAmerica is the largest annual March of Dimes fundraiser and is in its 35th year. Since 1970, WalkAmerica has raised more than $1.5 billion to help improve the health of babies.
