12-Month Pregnancy Program
|
An Online Curriculum Tool for Family and Consumer Sciences Teachers
Can pregnancy be 12 months long? Yes, if you include planning as a necessary component, sort of a trimester of its own.
That's the point behind this new initiative of the March of Dimes Colorado chapter. The 12-Month Pregnancy Program refers to the idea that to have a healthy mom, a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby, forethought is key. Ideally, every pregnancy would include at least three months of preparation followed by nine full months of gestation. If young people learn this today, perhaps in the future we will have more healthy moms and more healthy babies.
The articles, activities, videos and citations offered through the 12-Month Pregnancy are intended to provide Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) teachers with tools that are consistent with national standards and competencies, as well as FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America) skill development. These tools provide the most current information about pregnancy in an ever-changing world of trends, discoveries and interventions.
Our curriculum guide pertains to FACS's Understanding Development and refers to the child development section from conception to infancy. It contributes to meeting the educational standards of analyzing physical and emotional factors related to beginning the parenting process, and the principles of human growth and development through adolescence.
The March of Dimes is the champion for moms and babies. We are the leading nonprofit dedicated to their good health. Our mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. We accomplish our mission through research, services, education and advocacy. Our vision is the day when every mom has a healthy pregnancy and every baby gets the best possible start in life.
Acknowledgement The March of Dimes is a volunteer-driven organization. The quality of this project is the result of the leadership and dedication of two devoted Colorado volunteers, Peggy Harrison and Haley Henry. We express the deepest appreciation for their invaluable dedication to the design, structure and research of this project; for their excitement regarding excellence in teaching and for their unwavering commitment to the goal that one day every baby will be born healthy.
