| DENVER, Colo./The March of Dimes today announced the winners of its 2006 volunteer and sponsor awards. Their accomplishments were celebrated last night at a reception at the governor’s mansion.
Denver metro area volunteers honored were: Nanci Alpert; Julie Browman (Altitude Sports & Entertainment); Paul Eckert (Omni Interlocken Resort); Deanna Reinhardt (Charles Schwab); Donna Seligman; Jody Soper (First Data Corporation); and, Ellena Spaght (Denver Public Schools).
Volunteers from Southern Colorado who were honored were: Christie Gate; Ann Giambalvo (Bank of America); and, Jay Gust (Ritz Grill).
Western Colorado volunteer honorees were: Lisa Bickley (Mountain Aire Medical Supply); Dee Dee Hanson (Metro Brokers); and, Matt Ward (Bank of the West).
Volunteers were recognized for outstanding achievement as first-year volunteers, committee members, committee chairs and board members.
Named March of Dimes Colorado volunteer of the year was Jane Norton, former lieutenant governor. Norton ended in 2006 her three-year role as honorary chair of the March of Dimes Prematurity Campaign, in which she served as a spokesperson and advocate.
Corporate and media sponsors were also recognized for exceptional contributions. Winners were the Pueblo-based convenience store chain Loaf ‘N Jug and Lincoln Financial Media Company of Colorado. The latter owns and operates radio stations KYGO, Smooth Jazz 104.3, KS1075, Sportsradio 950 the Fan and ESPN Radio 1600.
Also honored for their work and efforts were families from across Colorado who served as official ambassadors in 2006. These included: the Barela family of Colorado Springs (Lei-Lani, Adam, Isaiah and Nyelah); the Colvin-Barnes family of Cañon City (Michelle and Cody); the Lemke family of Arvada (Alexsandra, Dan and Austin); the Lobato family of Grand Junction (Terry, Joe, Christian and Lindsay); and, the Reese family of Brighton (Candice, Randy, Erica and Alicia).
Award winners were nominated and selected by fellow volunteers and March of Dimes board and staff members.
Founded in 1938, the March of Dimes is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. To achieve its mission, the March of Dimes funds research, education, community services and advocacy. Currently in Colorado, the March of Dimes funds more than $1.5 million in healthy-baby programs.
