Connecticut Bikers for Babies Raises $60,000
13-Sep-09
(Middletown, CT, Sept. 13, 2009)—Thanks to nearly 900 bikers, and their friends and families, more babies in Connecticut will be born healthy. On Sunday, September 13 at the Middletown Elks riders came out in force to participate in Bikers for Babies and show their support for the smallest members of our community and raised approximately $60,000 to-date.

Funds raised by Bikers for Babies supports March of Dimes research and programs to help moms have full-term pregnancies and babies begin healthy lives.

The event was led by Grand Marshall Dee Snider of Twisted Sister, and now National Spokesperson for March of Dimes Bikers for Babies.  Riders rode 40 miles from Middletown to the Westbrook Elks where they enjoyed live music from Shovelhead, a BBQ by the shore, prize drawings and more.

Even though the ride is over, there’s still a chance for Connecticut’s bike enthusiasts to help.  Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s charitable organization The Dale Jr. Foundation has donated a custom-built Orange County Chopper to the March of Dimes. They’ve teamed up with Dee Snider to promote this unique opportunity.  Learn more about the chopper at bikersforbabies.org.

Sponsorship and leadership in Connecticut is provided by presenting sponsors  Gengras Motorcycles and Trantolo & Trantolo; and WCCC, Fox 61, Buzzuto’s, Shovelhead, 1800 Band, Double Fisted Band, Harbor Park Restaurant, Middletown and Westbrook Elks Clubs and the 2009 planning committee.

The most urgent infant health problem in the U.S. today is premature birth. It affects more than half a million babies each year, with the number growing every day. In 2008 the March of Dimes issued a Report Card on Premature Birth, giving the nation a D and Connecticut a C.  Babies born too soon are more likely to die or have disabilities. The March of Dimes is committed to reducing this toll by funding research to find the answers to premature birth and providing comfort and information to families who are affected.

The March of Dimes is the leading nonprofit organization for pregnancy and baby health. With chapters nationwide and its premier event, March for Babies®, the March of Dimes works to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.
