About Gary Unger

Few people have been as fortunate in their business career as Gary has been.

Looking back, his career spanning 44 years (and still going strong), is one that would be hard to plan today because it divided perfectly into four distinct buckets of experience that built on each other.  After six years of architectural school and two architectural degrees from Washington University in St. Louis and the University of Texas, he moved from Houston to NYC (there’s still a lot of Texas in the boy).

Early experiences, 1966-1974, were working for various architectural firms, the best of which by far was CRS.  Caudill Rowlett Scott was a bunch of Texas boys Gary knew that expanded their practice into NYC. Gary says he still uses all of their creative concepts for managing projects. They were masters at delivering client services.

Mid career experiences were working for American Express.  Gary was recruited in 1974 to manage the planning of the new 1.2 MSF Amex headquarters at the tip of NYC.  Gary believes every one planning to go into architecture should spend a couple of years understanding “what the client looks for."  At the end of the project in 1975 Gary stayed for five more years and ran planning and design worldwide for the company.  "Unbelievable experiences."

Starting CPG in 1980 was a dream for him.  He started the company with his wife and has not looked back once.  Aside from the great clients and over 6,000 projects the most fulfilling experiences are watching your employees families grow.  "Forty percent of our employees have been with us for over 15 years so we have seen a lot of growth," said Gary.

“In 1990 I started Link Systems, our real estate software company to build software products just like I needed at Amex to manage space, people, furniture and equipment.  Today Link Systems designs and sells products to Corporations for Lease Administration and Facilities Management and to Building Owners Portfolio Management.  The very best part about the business is that my son John has been running it for 15 years.  All in the Family,” said Gary.
