Sports Mentors to be Honored as Elm City Legends
Inaugural Elm City Legends Event to Benefit the March of Dimes

New Haven, CT – Local sports enthusiasts and fans have reason to celebrate, and can help give every baby a healthy start, on November 3rd when the March of Dimes presents the inaugural Elm City Legends, an evening dedicated to the best in area sports and coaching.

2008 Elm City Legends are:

Larry Ciotti: Running Back Coach, Yale University and former Head Football Coach, Daniel Hand High

George “Coach” DeMaio, News/Talk 960 WELI & ESPN Radio

Mike Golic, Co-host of ESPN Radio’s Mike and Mike in the Morning

Abie Grossfeld, Former Olympian and Gymnastics Coach, Southern CT State University
 
Gary Moore, Track Coach, Hillhouse High School

Rand Pecknold, Men’s Hockey Coach, Quinnipiac University

Joe Tonelli, Former Assistant Baseball Coach, University of New Haven and Former Athletics Director, Notre Dame of West Haven

“The first-ever Elm City Legends event represents a unique opportunity to collectively recognize some of the most deserving high school and college coaches in a variety of sports from the New Haven area,” said Chuck Menke, director of athletic communications, Quinnipiac University and nominations co-chair. “We’re also thrilled to honor Mike Golic for his commitment to the sporting community.  It promises to be an exciting evening in recognition of individuals who have greatly impacted the lives of so many student-athletes.”

“It is truly an honor to be part of the Elm City Legends event benefiting the March of Dimes,” continued Jack Siedlecki, head football coach, Yale University and nominations co-chair.  “We are honoring a group of individuals that have had a tremendous impact on the youth of Connecticut. In return, the next generation of Connecticut youth will benefit from the money raised for the March of Dimes.”

Elm City Legends attendees will enjoy an evening of sports trivia, Q & A with the honorees, food and beverages from local restaurants, auction action and more.  The evening will be hosted by Jason Page of ESPN Radio 1300/1410’s “The Back Page with Jason Page.”   New Haven Mayor John DeStefano is the Elm City Legends honorary chair for 2008. Elm City Legends takes place at the Omni New Haven Hotel at Yale from 5:30-8:30 p.m.
