Connecticut grants

The March of Dimes Connecticut Chapter and our partner organizations are helping moms have healthier pregnancies and babies begin healthier lives. Below are some programs the Connecticut Chapter has recently funded (2008-2011).

CenteringPregnancy ®
CenteringPregnancy is a model of prenatal care that combines the three main components of prenatal care (assessment, education, support) in a group setting. The Centering Pregnancy model of prenatal care provides care to women in groups.  The groups provide a safe, supportive environment where women can learn from each other and build positive, motivating relationships and positive birth outcomes. 

This program has been supported via Connecticut Chapter grants  at Community Health Center, Inc. (Middletown/Meriden); Hospital of Saint Raphael’s (New Haven); Mansfield Ob-Gyn, LLC; Fair Haven Community Health Center (New Haven); Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center (Hartford).

Decreasing Non-Medically Indicated Deliveries at < 39 Weeks Gestation
This Hartford-regional planning project (in preparation for a statewide initiative) aims to develop and implement a systematic hospital- based effort to educate obstetric health care providers regarding the risks of elective deliveries at <39 weeks gestation.  This grant is implemented at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center and is supported by the Northern Connecticut Neonatal-Perinatal Collaborative.

Eastern Area Health Education Center- De Mujer A Mujer                           
A program focused on preconception health information to support Latina women and Latino Men in Windham Country through the Access to Health Care Model. The program design includes education taking place as a “house party” to provide services in the privacy and comfort of the target population’s home. The education materials will include topic such as preventing high risk births and preparing for pregnancy and delivery.

Generations Family Health Center- Alternative Connections for Women’s Health- Willimantic
A community outreach and education program designed to reach women in Windham County who find it difficult to access mainstream health services due to atypical employment  schedules, lifestyles, substance abuse, unstable relationships, homelessness, teen issues, and cultural barriers. 

Stamford’s Mobile Medical Van: Neighborhood Outreach for Healthy Moms and Babies
The Stamford Health Department’s Mobile Medical Van will visit low-income neighborhoods with populations most in need of preconception/interconception education and prenatal service referrals to Stamford’s Hospital’s OBGYN Clinic and Optimus Healthcare, Inc.’s Clinic.

Sweet Delivery: A Gestational Diabetes Education Program
The grant from the Connecticut Chapter assists the Danbury Visiting Nurses Association to develop and implement a high quality gestational diabetes management/education program for pregnant women in greater Danbury area.

UNCAS Health District
The Uncas Health Department (UHD) will develop and facilitate a preconception health care coalition to access comprehensive preconception health in the geographical regional and develop strategies.
