Legislation for the new license plate was sponsored by Florida Representative Jennifer Carroll (R-Jacksonville), the first African-American female Republican ever elected to the Florida Legislature, who stated: “I am very proud to have sponsored the legislation that created the ‘Live the Dream’ Specialty License Plate. The Plate is a win-win for everyone: It pays homage to an American hero by using his likeness and raises much needed funds that will reduce health disparities in low income communities. It is a very exciting time for Floridians and I encourage everyone to purchase this plate.”
The Live the Dream license plate has already raised $38,525.00 since it became available in April 2005, and is currently ranked at 65 out of 102 plates. Michael Towner, of Foundation Consultants Corporation, designed the plate and secured permission from the Heirs of Martin Luther King to utilize the image Dr. King found on the plate.
Senator Larcenia Bullard (D-Miami) sponsored the bill in the Senate, and she commented: “I am delighted with the design and look forward to seeing them on vehicles throughout the state.”
Florida Governor Jeb Bush signed the law allowing sales of the new license plate to begin. The plate is available at all Tag agencies throughout the state.
“The goal is to assist in creating equal access to the American dream Dr. King so beautifully described in his speeches,” said Foundation president Chris Ramsey. “The plate’s sale will allow us to fund causes that directly affect the health and welfare of Florida’s at-risk children. The plate itself has an exciting, unique design, the only one of its kind in the United States. We are grateful to the King family for their support in this most important work.” The plate is authorized by the Heirs of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
