Below is a timeline of the various projects we have accomplished together:
1992 Home of New Beginnings The March of Dimes Ride took on its first designated project - building a state of the art, model Substance Abuse Residential Treatment program known as the Home of New Beginnings. In the spring of 1998, this vision became a reality. The mission of the Home is to improve the health of high-risk mothers, their unborn babies, and newborn babies and children by caring for the families' medical and social needs over a year and a half period.
1996 Baby Mobiles The March of Dimes Ride began a rural van transportation project known as Baby Mobiles. Since 1998, 13 vans have been awarded to rural Georgia health care facilities. The vans transport women back and forth to their health care facilities to provide proper care for their unborn and newborn babies. The Ride logo is prominently displayed on all vans.
2002 Tandem Mass Spectrometry Money raised by riders this year helped us begin a new and exciting program to impact every child born in the state of Georgia. Funds raised by the 2001 and 2002 Rides went towards getting Tandem Mass Spectrometry (TMS) machines, which are used for newborn screening. This technology enables more than 133, 000 newborns per year to be screened for up to 40 rare, genetic disorders and non-genetic disorders- which can in turn, help prevent early infant death, mental retardation and allow for the earliest treatment of such disorders. Thanks to YOU, the Georgia Division of Public Health, CDC, Emory Genetics Lab, and the Georgia March of Dimes, Georgia is one of the first states to implement this new technology and expand follow-up services through a private/public partnership.
2007 NICU Family Support® March of Dimes strives to support Georgia families with a baby in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and promote family-centered care within the hospital. Ride donations will directly fund a bedside reading program designed to help parents in the NICU bond with their infants, informational kiosks to provide education and support to parents, and a second NICU Family Support® Program in a Georgia hospital. This program provides an in-hospital March of Dimes Staff member who offers education and comfort to families during the NICU hospitalization of their newborn, during the transition home, and in the event of a newborn death.
2008 Brings Exciting Changes
In 2008, the March of Dimes announced the change of it's signature event's name from WalkAmerica to March for Babies. While our mission remains the same, the new name reminds participants of the March of Dimes goal to be a champion for all babies. In light of this change, the Ride to Save Babies will be re-named Bikers for Babies. More information to come. |
