A Special Note From The Chapter:
The March of Dimes is dedicated to improving the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. We have made a difference in your life if: • Your baby or a baby you know was born too small, or received lifesaving surfactant therapy to help with breathing • You (or your wife) took folic acid before pregnancy because you knew taking folic acid prior to preganancy can prevent Spina Bifida. • You know that drinking during pregnancy can cause Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, the leading cause of preventable mental retardation. • Your baby or one you know has been treated in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). • Your baby or one you know was born after 1968. That’s the year the first newborn screen (PKU) was available to all babies. We continue to make sure all babies have access to a core set of newborn screens that can help prevent mental retardation, developmental disability and death. • You or your children were vaccinated against polio.
