Summary of Programs/Modules

TRANSITION TO HOME
To address the informational, and emotional needs of families during their transition home from the NICU.

Direct service activities include: discharge binder, CPR parent hours, infant massage parent hours, risk reduction parent hours and the Family Reunion.

FAMILY EMPOWERMENT
To empower families in the NICU to participate in their baby’s care, be an advocate for their newborn, and to be a member of the healthcare team.

Direct services activities include: Informational boxes, calendars, RSV parent hours, Scholastic book cart.

  
Summary of NFS Program Highlights

• Established parent / professional NICU Action Committee including participation from a AMC Pediatrician, NICU RN’s and four graduate NICU families one of which, is a Surgeon at AMC to guide the program decisions.

• Trained 55 NICU nurses in developmental care principles through Children’s Medical Ventures Preemie for a Day.

• Initiated Transition to Home and Family Empowerment Modules

• AMC’s first ever March for Babies team raised more than $30,000 with staff participation from the following departments: Special Care Nursery, Labor and Delivery, Human Resources, Mother Baby Unit, ICU,
Respiratory and the support of several other departments.

• Olympic Gold Medalist Kerry Strug and March of Dimes volunteers visit AMC and donate clothes to NICU families as part of March of Dimes national youth conference in July, 2008. This event was televised on one of Atlanta’s local TV stations.

• Baby/Family Reunion in the hospital courtyard attended by 100 families.
