Twenty-Eight Radio Stations Unite to Raise Money and Awareness for the March of Dimes
WHAT: For the second year in row, every major morning drive-time radio show in Atlanta will donate its airtime to the March of Dimes Georgia Chapter in an unprecedented radio event, Broadcasters for Babies. Putting competition aside, the radio stations will take to the airways a common message – every baby deserves a healthy start – and encourage listeners to make donations by calling the toll free number 1-866-MOD-BABY (1-866-663-2229) or visiting www.marchofdimes.com/georgia.
“The radio community has been a friend of the March of Dimes for 70 years, so it’s no surprise that the general managers of the Atlanta radio stations champion the cause of healthy babies today,“ said Mark Gibson, state director for the March of Dimes Georgia Chapter.” Radio hosted the March of Dimes first radiothon in the 1930s after President Roosevelt requested the nation’s help in funding research to find a cure for polio. We absolutely need radio’s continued support to raise awareness and critical dollars in our quest to solve the growing medical crisis of prematurity, birth defects and infant mortality.”
WHEN: Tuesday, July 29th, Morning Drive-Time (6 -11 am)
WHY: In the United States, one in eight babies is born prematurely. That's 1,367 babies each day born too soon and too small facing an increased risk of death and serious medical complications such as cerebral palsy, mental retardation, chronic lung disease and developmental delays. 120,000 babies will be born with a birth defect and nearly 30,000 babies will die before their first birthday. In an average week in Georgia, 372 babies are born preterm and despite decades of research, scientists have yet to develop effective ways to prevent premature birth.
INTERVIEWS: Radio spokespeople and March of Dimes representatives including doctors, families and business leaders are available for interviews upon request. Video of March of Dimes community grant partners can be pre-arranged but require at least 24 hour notice.
