Having a baby hospitalized in a NICU is often a frightening, confusing and overwhelming experience for the parents, grandparents and siblings of the newborn. For many babies, the stay in a NICU is like a roller coaster ride with ups and downs, triumphs and setbacks. The March of Dimes developed the NICU Family Support® program to provide information and comfort to families during the NICU hospitalization, the transition home, and in the event of a newborn's death.

In 2006, the March of Dimes launched a NICU Family Support® Program at Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah followed in 2007 with another at Atlanta Medical Center in Downtown Atlanta. These programs continue to enhance family-centered care and provide information and comfort to hundreds of families each year.

 

NICU Family Support Program Highlights

Here are some examples of how our NICU Family Support programs are providing comfort and resource to families with infants in the NICU:

• Training for Parent to Parent volunteers 
• Staff development for nurses at the National Neonatal Nurses Conference in Savannah, GA 
• Provide disposable cameras for families during their stay in the NICU
• NICU Family Reunion for "graduates" from the NICU and their families
