Symposium Topics:
“The Baggage She Brings to the Door”
Larry Humbert, MSSW PgDip; Executive Director/CEO, Indiana Perinatal Network Caitlin Finnegan Priest, MPH; Public Policy Coordinator, Indiana Perinatal Network The pregnant Medicaid patient that comes to your facility brings with her many factors that have negatively affected her life and her pregnancy. Getting a clearer picture of this patient and her issues can help you understand her better and, in the end, communicate more effectively in the short time you have with her. This workshop will cover such topics as domestic violence, diverse cultural beliefs and practices, postpartum depression and substance use and how to approach women about these delicate issues in a respectful manner. The workshop will also feature published research by IPN regarding cultural beliefs and practices and the impact that unplanned pregnancies can have on important prenatal behaviors and satisfaction with care.
