| Thousands of volunteers hit the streets to raise money to fight premature birth, birth defects and infant mortality April 16 - May 14, 2005
(Indianapolis, IN, March 2, 2005)- Since 1973, thousands of volunteers have hit the streets each spring to raise money to help the March of Dimes save babies’ lives by taking part in WalkAmerica. In 2005, 45 communities in Indiana will mobilize to fight premature birth, birth defects and infant mortality.
“WalkAmerica is the prototype for all walking events not only because the March of Dimes held the first event of its kind in 1973,” says Janie Sue Dubbs, State Director of Corporate Development and WalkAmerica. “WalkAmerica is the standard because the funds raised by participants has successfully made an impact on the health and lives of babies through the years. The development of surfactant therapy, nitric oxide therapy, a regionalized system of neonatal intensive care and other medical advances that save babies lives everyday were supported with March of Dimes funding raised by WalkAmerica. The March of Dimes continues to successfully save babies’ lives because these dedicated, wonderful volunteers are successful in their support of the March of Dimes.”
Annually, more than 15,000 individuals volunteer and participate in WalkAmerica in Indiana. Many of the participants take part as members of one of 1200 WalkAmerica teams formed at work.
