(Indianapolis, IN, August 12, 2005) – March of Dimes Indiana Chapter youth volunteers traveled to the March of Dimes 50th Anniversary National Youth Volunteer Leadership Conference, held July 27-31, 2005 in Washington, D.C. and met with Senator Richard Lugar.
Senator Lugar gave the opening speech at the "Dialogue with Policymakers" session held Friday, July 29 in the Hart Senate Office Building. More than 200 college and high school students attended the conference.
"Premature birth affects more than 1 in 8 babies in Indiana each year, the rates are rising and it remains the leading cause of death in the first month of life.,” said Ernie Yeager, March of Dimes Coordinator of Program Services. “These youth leaders are helping save babies’ lives by mobilizing their peers to not only understand the problem but also to help the March of Dimes save babies. Their leadership has been a big part of our history of success and we need them more than ever as we tackle the crisis of premature birth.”
