(Avon, IN, February 19, 2006) Teams from as far as Evansville and Huntington traveled to participate in the 28th Annual March of Dimes Snoball Softball Tournament despite forecasts of near-freezing temperatures. Players do everything they can to stay warm as they wait for their turn at bat. Some even brought spectators who watch the games wrapped in blankets.
“It’s all for the March of Dimes,” says Steve Boone, owner of Avon Softball Park and Chair of the Snoball Softball Committee. The committee is striving to raise $20,000 for the March of Dimes through team entry fees, a silent auction, and sponsorships.
The Men’s Tournament began Saturday with over forty-two teams playing softball from 8 a.m. until about 9 p.m. at Avon Softball Park. The tournament resumes today at 8 a.m. and the winners will be determined in the championship game beginning at 1:15 p.m.
The Co-Ed Tournament will take place on February 25th and 26th at Avon Softball Park. Both tournaments are sponsored by Q95, Hendricks Regional Health, Irwin Union Bank, Texas Roadhouse, Zink Distributing, Avon Creek Apartments, Lee Adams Tire, and AT&T. Ace Party Rentals donated a tent to help shield players from the cold.
The March of Dimes is the voluntary health organization whose mission is to save babies’ lives by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality and in 2003 launched its Prematurity Campaign. The March of Dimes funds programs of scientific research, community programs, education, and advocacy that save babies’ lives. Visit www.marchofdimes.com/Indiana for more information.
