    Indianapolis, IN, May 08, 2014 —

Indiana Win Secures March of Dimes a Seat on the Study Committee

The Indiana Chapter anounces today it has secured a win for passage of SB 408, a law defining "neonatal abstinence syndrome" (NAS) and requiring the state department of health to meet with several maternal/child health organizations, including the March of Dimes as formally included in the law.

The committee is to study and make recommendations on issues concerning Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, and report on NAS to the legislature. It also allows the state department of health to establish pilot programs with hospitals to implement appropriate and effective models for NAS identification, data collection, and reporting.

Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome is when a baby is born addicted to drugs, nicotine or other substances ingeted by the Mother during pregnancy.

The mission of March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing premature birth, birth defegts and infant mortality.  March of Dimes funds programs of community services, advocacy, research and education to fight the threats to the lives and health of babies.
