Prematurity Curriculum
Premature birth, or the birth of an infant before the 37th completed weeks of pregnancy, severely impacts the lives of thousands of Iowans each year.  One in eight babies in Iowa is born too early and this rate is even higher in women under the age of 20.  The March of Dimes Central Division has developed a comprehensive prematurity curriculum to educate and inform students of the risks involved with premature birth.  This curriculum provides a comprehensive look at causes, consequences and prevention of premature birth.

·         The interactive curriculum and its companion tool kit  have been developed for high school students with a basic knowledge of human development and anatomy.

·         Students will meet four individuals born prematurely and walk their journey with them.  They will learn what prematurity is, the potential health and learning challenges, the risk factors for prematurity, and the warning signs of preterm labor.

·         Four lessons contribute to learning in science, math, high order thinking, social acceptance, reading, and problem solving.

·         The supplementary teacher’s resource guide provides a lesson-at-a glance, tips for classroom discussion, pre/post test, and references for additional information.

Tool kits can be checked out at all division offices.
