More than 7,000 participated in the March for Babies May 3 at the Kansas City Power & Light District. Families walking in honor of an affected child joined with corporate leaders to raise more than $1 million for the March of Dimes.
The pre-school crowd preferred the bounce houses and crafts and the tweens liked performances by Radio Disney’s Rockin’ Road Crew and the Kansas City Roller Warriors. Participants young and old enjoyed walking route through downtown, lunch donated by Cosentino’s and time with family and friends.
March for Babies, formerly known as WalkAmerica, is the March of Dimes premier fundraising event that benefits all babies—those born healthy and those who need help to survive and thrive. Funds raised by March for Babies in Kansas City support local research grants focused on issues related to premature birth and community programs such as NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) Family Support at Saint Luke’s Hospital.
The most urgent infant health problem in the U.S. today is premature birth. It affects more than half a million babies each year, with the number growing every day. The March of Dimes is committed to reducing this toll by funding research to find the answers to premature birth and providing comfort and information to families who are affected.
In 2009 national March for Babies sponsors are Kmart, the March of Dimes number one corporate supporter, CIGNA, Continental Airlines, Famous Footwear, Farmers Insurance Group, FedEx, First Response, Liberty Tax Services and Ther-Rx.
In Kansas City, March for Babies is supported by lead sponsors Farmers Insurance Group, Sprint, Citi, Black & Veatch and Capitol Federal.
