Kentucky’s Moms and Babies to Benefit from March of Dimes Grants
(Louisville, KY, January 6, 2003)—The March of Dimes Greater Kentucky Chapter has awarded grants to fulfill unmet maternal and child health needs in the Commonwealth. The grants address smoking cessation, coordination of care for preterm infants, folic acid education for women of childbearing age, professional education and other issues that are unique to our community, said Ruth Ann Shepherd, M.D., March of Dimes Program Services Chair.

These grants are one way the March of Dimes fulfills its mission to reduce birth defects and infant mortality through the support of education, advocacy, research and community services. Nationally the March of Dimes awards more than $30 million annually for biomedical research, and in communities the March of Dimes gives financial support to initiate activities that target specific local needs.

“We are pleased that our successful fundraising efforts, such as WalkAmerica, make it possible for us to support new efforts to help more babies to be born healthy in Kentucky, Dr. Shepherd said.

The March of Dimes is a national voluntary health agency whose mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects and infant mortality. Founded in 1938, the March of Dimes funds programs of research, community services, education, and advocacy to save babies.
