March of Dimes invests more than $185,000 to educate women about Folic Acid in Kentucky.

During the past three years, the Mission Investment Opportunities Program (MIOP) has received a lot of attention in Kentucky. In 1999, the Greater Kentucky Chapter and Barren River and Pike County Health Departments were awarded a MIOP grant from the March of Dimes National Foundation to promote Folic Acid education. The Green River District Health Department was added to the grant in 2000.
Through the MIOP grant, over $200,000 was invested in educating women of childbearing age and their families about the importance of taking Folic Acid prior to and during pregnancy to help prevent neural tube defects. As a result, public awareness of Folic Acid has increased dramatically over the past three years. A study by Horizons Research International found a 26% increase in Folic Acid awareness between 1999 and 2001 in MIOP communities.
Although the MIOP funding period ended in October of this year, each of our partner agencies plans to continue their Folic Acid promotion efforts into the future with the support of the Kentucky Folic Acid Partnership.
