Ideas to Incorporate into Your Prematurity Awareness Month Plans
Existing lighting can be covered with theatrical gel pads or by putting pink and blue bulbs in existing spotlights. Pink and blue mini-lights have been strung on buildings and trees, both indoors and out. While many local places have blue lights available, pink is harder to find. We have found them at these two websites:

Electric candles with pink and blue bulbs work nicely in homes. Even small table lamps can be put in front windows. You can find pink and blue light bulbs at your local hardware store. You may want to add decorative baby flags or other baby decorations (available at party stores) to the scene.
It is most important that you let the community know why you are shining in pink and blue. You might want to put up a sign or leave a note in the neighborhood doors. Be sure to contact your local newspaper for a photo story. Many sites plan observances in conjunction with their lightings. These may include presentations by health care professionals on the problem of preterm birth, testimonials by families of preemies, display of preemie sized clothes and equipment, and pink and blue refreshments. Pink and blue light sticks have been handed out to children to light during the ceremony. Brochures on preterm birth are available (free) from the Chapter to handout.
In 2006, the following sites in Maine participated by lighting in pink and blue: Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield (our state sponsor of the Prematurity Campaign), Babies “R” Us, Maine Medical Center, Central Maine Medical Center, Great Falls in Lewiston/Auburn, Maine General Hospital at their three sites, Rumford Community Hospital and Rumford Falls, Houlton Regional Hospital, Parkview Memorial Hospital and the Augusta Armory.
