March of Dimes Scores No-Smoking Victory for Female Restaurant Workers and Patrons
The Maryland-National Capital Area Chapter (which includes Northern Virginia) and the Virginia Chapter supported recent legislation that expanded the state smoking ban in Virginia to all public restaurants and bars.

The passage of SB 1105 and HB 1703 will affect more than 1.6 million women of childbearing age in Virginia by reducing their exposure to cigarette smoke.  Gov. Tim Kaine signed the bill on March 9 at Croc's 19th Street Bistro in Virginia Beach, an establishment owned and operated by Virginia Chapter Public Affairs committee member Laura Wood Habr.  The law takes effect on December 1, 2009.

The March of Dimes supported the ban based on scientific evidence that secondhand smoke is an environmental toxicant contributing to preterm births.
