AFCEA and March of Dimes Announce Finalists for 2010 Heroines in Technology Awards

Event honors area corporate technology leaders for outstanding commitment to community service

The Northern Virginia chapter of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA NOVA) and the March of Dimes today announced the finalists for the tenth annual Heroines in Technology® Awards.  The awards recognize women and women-run businesses for their exemplary commitment to community service.  The winners will be announced at a black-tie gala on November 12, 2010, at the Hyatt Regency Reston in Reston, Va.

Nominees were submitted from all segments of the technology community in Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Northern Virginia including government, not-for-profit and commercial organizations.

AFCEA NOVA is the new event partner for Heroines in Technology.  It is the largest chapter of AFCEA International, a nonprofit professional association that represents the top government, industry and military professionals in the fields of communications, electronics, intelligence, software, information systems, imaging and multi-media.

Also new to this year’s event is the AFCEA International Government Heroine Award, which will recognize women employed by federal, state and local governments who exhibit extraordinary volunteerism over and above the mandates of their government role.  Additional award categories include Rising Heroine, Individual Heroine, NVTC Corporate Heroine and Lifetime Achievement Heroine.

The keynote speaker will be Carol Evans, CEO and founder of Working Mother Media, which includes Working Mother magazine.  The 2010 event chairs are Sandy Scearce, Director of Business Development at Grant Thornton; Helaine Cooper, Director of Operations, Red Cedar Government Solutions;   and Ms. Fleeson, who is a past Heroines of Technology recipient.  The mistress of ceremonies will be Amy Morris, co-host of “Federal Drive” on Federal News Radio.

The event will include dinner, music, dancing, and live and silent auctions.  Proceeds from the event will support local March of Dimes programs of research, community services, education and advocacy to reduce the occurrence of birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. Since 2001, the event has raised more than $1 million to support the March of Dimes mission of saving babies.
