On October 26th at the Stevens Estate in North Andover the March of Dimes will present Drew Weber with the Charitable Leadership Award for his ongoing commitment to the health of babies.
A native of Rockville Center, NY by birth, Drew Weber has become a vital part of the Lowell and surrounding Merrimack Valley community since becoming the owner of the Lowell Spinners in 1997, donating upwards of $215,000 for local charities since 2001, through Lowell Spinners Charities and, more recently, through the Joann Weber Charitable Fund, created in the winter of 2007 following the passing of Drew’s beloved wife Joann to a prolonged battle with pancreatic cancer.
Drew’s commitment to the Merrimack Valley extends beyond Lowell Spinners Charities and the Joann Weber Charitable Fund, as he has partnered with charities including Kids in Disability Sports, the Cystinosis Research Network, the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, Challenge Unlimited at Ironstone Farm, the Winter Warmth Project, the Lustgarten Foundation and more.
In 2008 Drew began his partnership with the March of Dimes, when Massachusetts Chapter of the March of Dimes came to him with the idea of tying together the Spinners and a cause. At the time Drew knew very little about the importance of the March of Dimes and thousands of families and babies they help everyday. However, in talking with Ed and the regional committee members, Drew was touched by the stories of families helped and the need for more assistance.
As a result a partnership was born. For the past two seasons the Merrimack Valley Walk for Babies has started and ended at LeLacheur Park, touching many people along the way, sure to return to LeLacheur again for the 2010 walk.
On a professional level, the Spinners have sold out every game since the end of the 1999 season, winning the Larry MacPhail Promotional Trophy and Baseball America Award over the past several years, two of the highest honors in Minor League Baseball. Weber has fostered an environment for creativity, which translates to success both on and off the field, for the Spinners as an organization and their charitable efforts.
Drew’s proudest effort with the Spinners is the “Pinch Hit Hero’s” promotion which has allowed thousands of underprivileged children in the Merrimack Valley to attend a Spinners game for free.
Personally, Drew grew up in New York, where both of his adult children reside. Drew’s son Michael is in corporate sales in Manhattan, where he resides with his wife Kathy, while daughter Kate also works in corporate sales and resides in Manhattan. Drew is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati and earned an MBA from the New York University Graduate Business School.
