Jennifer Burg's Road to the Ford Ironman Louisville
Louisville, Ky.
On August 31, Jennifer Burg will fulfill one of her greatest accomplishments: becoming an Ironman. Along with the rigorous training schedule that she will follow, Jennifer is also raising funds to benefit the March of Dimes, the leading nonprofit organization for pregnancy and baby health.
Unable to carry children herself, Jen's best friend gave her the most precious gift: to serve as the surrogate to her twin girls. But after 31 weeks, Jennifer held her friend's hand as she gave birth to Kaylee Ann and Madison Christine. For six weeks, Jen's girls struggled to survive at the NICU at Inova Fairfax Hospital. A year later, as Jen and her family celebrated the miracle of the girls' first birthday, she learned that her sister went into premature labor at just 24 weeks and delivered Blake, a 1-pound, 14-ounce baby boy. While all three children are thriving today, Blake still faces additional heart surgery and the possibility of future intestinal surgery.
Jen's story is not uncommon, which is why she's supporting the March of Dimes, which funds lifesaving- and Nobel Prize-winning research. With midnight sessions on her stationary bike and early morning runs, it's hard to believe she works full time for the U.S. Air Force and raises two girls (who sometimes train with her).
