National Capital Area Chapter History
|
The National Capital Area Chapter is one of 54 March of Dimes chapters nationwide with National Offices based in White Plains, New York and Washington, D.C. The National Capital Area serves families and volunteers in Northern Virginia and the District of Columbia.
The March of Dimes was established in 1938 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to end the threat of the polio epidemic. In 1955, the Salk vaccine for polio was proven safe, potent and effective, and three years later the organization shifted its focus to the prevention of birth defects and infant mortality. In January 2003, the organization launched a five-year, $75 million prematurity campaign. This is only the third national campaign in the organization’s 65-year history. |
