| The kick-off to the 20th annual March of Dimes Alexander Macomb Citizens of the Year awards dinner is scheduled for Tuesday, May 20 at 6:30 at Gowanie Golf Club in Harrison Township. (Media is invited to attend.) This year’s awardees will be introduced to the committee that coordinates the event. And three very special young people will introduce the honorees to the mission of the March of Dimes. The Caton triplets of Warren, MI were born premature two years ago and are living happy lives. Jacob and Grace are quite healthy and Hannah has lingering serious health problems from her premature birth.
Woman of the year, Dana Camphous Peterson, is the founder of Care House. This organization provides free support and care services to abused children. Man of the year, Reverend Father Demetrios Kavadas, of Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, is the first clergyman to ever be honored. His work in the community is mostly to help the mentally challenged and other health issues. Family of the year, the Switalskis, is a family with three sons. Mickey is a state senator and Mark and Matt are circuit court judges.
Every year, the committee selects model citizens from Macomb County to honor based on their involvement in the community and their dedication to serving others.
This is the kick-off for the awards dinner, which will be held Wednesday, September 24 at 6 pm at Fern Hill Country Club in Clinton Township. Tickets for that evening are $100 each. Advance tickets are recommended.
The March of Dimes mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects and infant mortality. Currently, the March of Dimes has entered a new Prematurity campaign. This five-year, $75 million dollar research, awareness and education campaign is aimed to help families have healthier babies. The March of Dimes hopes to raise over $100,000 again this year at this event to further the mission.
