| The kick-off to the 20th annual March of Dimes Alexander Macomb Citizens of the Year awards dinner is scheduled for Tuesday, May 20 at 6:30 at Gowanie Golf Club in Harrison Township. (Media is invited.) This year’s awardees will be introduced to the committee that coordinates the event. And three very special young people will introduce the honorees to the mission of the March of Dimes. The Caton triplets of Warren, MI were born premature two years ago and are living happy lives. Jacob and Grace are quite healthy and Hannah has lingering serious health problems from her premature birth.
Man of the year, Reverend Father Demetrios Kavadas, of Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, is the first clergyman to ever be honored. Woman of the year, Dana Camphous Peterson, is the founder of Care House which provides free support and care services to abused children. Family of the year, the Switalskis, is a family with three sons. Mickey Switalski is a Michigan state senator. Brothers Mark and Matthew Switalski are both circuit court judges.
Every year, the committee selects model citizens to honor based on their involvement in the community and their dedication to serving others.
This is the kick-off for the awards dinner, which will be held Wednesday, September 24 at 6 pm at Fern Hill Country Club in Clinton Township. Tickets for that evening are $100 each. Advance tickets are recommended.
The March of Dimes mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects and infant mortality. Currently, the March of Dimes has entered a new Prematurity campaign. This five-year, $75 million dollar research, awareness and education campaign is aimed to help families have healthier babies.
