LOCAL FASHION INDUSTRY RAISES MONEY TO SAVE BABIES Designers and Models Put on Show for 55th Fashion Extravaganza The March of Dimes and Metro-Detroit’s most talented fashion designers and models are joining forces at the Burton Manor in Livonia on Sunday, March 9th for one of the longest running March of Dimes fundraisers, the Fashion Extravaganza. The event was founded over 50 years ago by Detroit’s leading African American women in an effort to help children who were battling the crippling effects of polio. An effective vaccine for polio was developed in 1955. Started by the late Violet T. Lewis, founder of Detroit’s Lewis College of Business, the Fashion Extravaganza is one of Detroit’s premier fashion shows and has raised over one million dollars to support the mission of the March of Dimes to save babies. Avis Washington, chairperson of the event says, “I am humbled to Chair this event that has been in existence for fifty-five years. We are entrusted with a legacy created by good people such as Violet Lewis. Imagine the positive changes that have occurred in our world since 1953!” She went on to say, “It is now our obligation to continue the tradition. We are working with the March of Dimes to prevent premature birth and help save babies in other ways.” This year, vendors will open shop at 11:00 a.m. selling jewelry, purses, flowers, clothes, and a variety of accessories. The fashion show will begin at 1:00 p.m. Tickets for remaining seats are on a first-come basis at $60 and $50. People can also choose to sponsor at various levels.
