Michigan Chapter - Chapter History
In 1938 the March of Dimes was founded to find a cure for polio. In 1955 a significant milestone took place in Michigan: the discovery of the Salk vaccine, which all but eliminated polio, was announced at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Forty years later, Dr. Salk made his last public appearance at the university where he conducted so much of his research.

Jail & Bail got its start in Port Huron in 1957.  A disc jockey named Lee Van Dam came up with the idea of rounding up ordinary citizens, charging them with make-believe "crimes," and sentencing them to raise bail in the form of pledges to the March of Dimes.  Port Huron continues to host the biggest one-day Jail & Bail event in the U.S.

Troy-based Kmart Corporation has been the nation's Number One WalkAmerica Team for well over a decade. In 2002, Kmart associates raised $2.7 million in support of the walk that saves babies.
